Shaadi season on paper: Moodboard Junk Journal Kit, Delicate Florals notebook, Photo Card Holder and hand-painted Wooden Photo Frames

Shaadi season junk journal: how to keep every wedding on paper

Your cousin's mehndi, a college friend's sangeet, a baraat that took three hours to cover one kilometre. Shaadi season is back, and this year's winter muhurats fall between late November and mid-December. If you're attending more than one wedding (or having one), that's a lot of memories packed into a few weeks.

Most of them end up as 400 blurry photos on your phone and an invite card lying in a drawer. A junk journal gives them a proper home. Here's how to keep the whole wedding season on paper, whether you're the bride, the bhai, the best friend or the guest who only came for the food.

Why a junk journal works for weddings

A wedding album shows what the day looked like. A journal holds what it felt like: the joke someone cracked during the haldi, the song that got everyone dancing, the aunty who asked about your "plans". It's also messy-friendly. You don't need a theme or neat handwriting. You need a notebook, some glue and the little paper things a wedding leaves behind.

What to save from each function

Weddings are full of paper and tiny keepsakes. Start a small envelope or pouch on day one and drop these in:

  • The invite card. Cut out the Ganesha, the motif or your name on the envelope. The fancy ones have gorgeous borders that make perfect page frames.
  • Mehndi function bits: a dried marigold, a photo of the design on your palm, the cone wrapper.
  • Haldi: a yellow-stained tissue (dried flat), a petal, a picture of everyone's ruined clothes.
  • Sangeet: the dance practice playlist, the step names you made up, the song you messed up on stage.
  • Baraat and pheras: a flower from the varmala, a bit of ribbon or gota from the decor, the time of the muhurat.
  • Food: the menu card, a sweet box sticker, a list of everything you ate at the chaat counter.
  • Little things: a return gift tag, a bindi card, a thread, a name card from your table.

If it's flat and means something, it can go in. If it's just clutter, let it go. (We wrote more about that in why your junk journal isn't a trash journal.)

Page ideas for the whole shaadi season

  1. The guest list page. One page per wedding: whose wedding, the date, the city and the outfit you wore.
  2. Outfit diary. A sketch or photo of each look, plus where it came from and who complimented it.
  3. The invite collage. Layer cutouts from every invite you got this season onto one double spread.
  4. Mehndi hands. Trace your hand and fill it with the design, or stick a printed photo of it.
  5. Sangeet setlist. Write down every song from the night and star the one that got the whole family on the floor.
  6. Overheard at the wedding. The funniest lines from relatives, cousins and the DJ. These are the pages you'll laugh at in ten years.
  7. The food review. Rate the jalebi, the paneer tikka and the coffee counter out of ten.
  8. Blessings page. Ask the couple, your nani or a friend to write one line for you right there. Keep a pen in your clutch.
  9. Pocket page. Glue an envelope in and keep the small loose bits inside: tickets, petals, a bindi strip.
  10. The couple's page. If it's a close friend's wedding, leave a page about how they met, or how you met them.
  11. Season wrap-up. At the end of December, list every wedding, your favourite function and the best dance of the season.

If you're the bride or groom

You won't have time to journal during the wedding, and that's fine. Ask one sibling or friend to be your "memory keeper": they collect the invite, a flower, the menu and one funny line from each function in an envelope. After the honeymoon, sit down with chai and fill the pages together. It turns into a lovely first-month-of-marriage ritual.

What you'll need

You can start with any notebook, glue stick and tape. If you'd like everything in one box, The Moodboard Junk Journal Kit (₹1,499) comes in a keepsake box with an A5 junk journal notebook, 8 sticker sheets, 18 craft sheets in assorted designs, scissors, glue, washi tape, 2 lace paper doilies, an envelope for your pocket page and a prompt card. Add the bits from the season and it's done.

Prefer a cleaner book for the outfit diary and guest list? A floral hardcover like Delicate Florals or a softcover like Floral Ikkat feels right at home next to all that marigold. Use code HEY10 for 10% off notebooks.

Keep one photo out of the journal

Not every memory has to live inside a book. Pick your favourite picture from the season and put it somewhere you'll see it daily:

  • A Photo Card Holder (₹199) on your desk for a printed Polaroid from the sangeet.
  • A hand-painted Wooden Photo Frame (₹499) for the one family photo where everyone actually looked at the camera.

A small gift idea for the couple

Looking for something more personal than another dinner set? Give the couple a junk journal kit with the first page already started: their invite cutout, the date and one line from you. They fill in the rest. A photo frame with a picture from the wedding works beautifully too.

Start before the first function

Shaadi season moves fast, and once it's over the paper bits disappear. Put an envelope in your bag before the first function this year. In a few weeks you'll have a journal full of marigolds, menus and inside jokes, and that's a better souvenir than any return gift.
